“Fleet Admiral William “Bull” Halsey Jr.” That’s the name behind Halsey Field House. Completed in 1957, the Halsey Field House stands as a testament to naval tradition. It is a multi-purpose arena at the United States Naval Academy. Halsey Field House covers 80,000 square feet.
Halsey Field House primarily serves as the home venue for the wrestling team. The basketball teams also use the facility for practices. Imagine midshipmen athletes honing their skills within these walls.
The field house itself spans 200 feet in width and 370 feet in length. The high roof shelters the interior, reaching a height of 70 feet. A 200-meter synthetic running track surrounds the main floor.
For wrestling matches, Halsey Field House can accommodate up to 5,000 enthusiastic fans. The energy inside during a competition must be electric.
Before Alumni Hall opened in 1991, the Navy Midshipmen men’s basketball team called Halsey Field House home. It was the heart of Navy basketball for many years.
Today, Halsey Field House is home to the indoor track and field teams. It features squash and tennis courts. You will also find a 65 tatami dojo for Aikido/Judo. A climbing wall adds another dimension to the athletic offerings.
The North Wing houses five basketball courts. Five squash courts are available, alongside dressing rooms. There is also a conditioning room and classrooms for physical education. Athletic-gear storage and office space for instructors complete the picture.
The weight room is one of three strength and conditioning facilities at the academy. It offers 5,500 square feet of space. It serves the needs of men’s and women’s basketball, crew, swimming, and squash teams.
Halsey Field House also held midshipman assemblies. It played a central role in the daily life of Naval Academy students.
William “Bull” Halsey Jr. graduated from the Naval Academy in 1904. He became a World War II naval hero. Naming Halsey Field House after him was a fitting tribute. He is one of only four individuals to have obtained the rank of Fleet Admiral.
Due to security restrictions, access to the U.S. Naval Academy grounds is limited. Only vehicles with a Department of Defense sticker can drive onto the grounds for events.
Halsey Field House represents more than just a sports venue. It embodies the spirit of the Naval Academy. It honors a distinguished alumnus. It continues to serve the athletic and training needs of future naval officers.
