Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the impressive glass roof of Hallenbad City! This architectural marvel, right here before us, has been gracing Zurich’s skyline since 1941. Hallenbad City proudly claims the title of Switzerland’s first indoor swimming pool to boast a 50-meter pool. Imagine the excitement when it first opened! Designed by the renowned city architect, Hermann Herter, this building is a testament to the “Landistil” architectural style. Practical and streamlined, yet punctuated with charming details! But Hallenbad City is more than just a pretty facade. Inside, you’ll find a swimmer’s paradise. A six-lane, 50-meter pool beckons, kept at a balmy 28 degrees Celsius. For a more leisurely dip, there’s a non-swimmer’s pool heated to a delightful 30 degrees. And if you’re feeling energetic, head upstairs to the gym! As you admire the building, look closely at the stairwell. Notice the magnificent murals? Those are the work of Karl Walser, a renowned Swiss artist, dating back to the pool’s grand opening. Over the years, Hallenbad City has undergone some TLC. It was renovated in 1980 and again in 2013. The latest refurbishment aimed to restore its original glory. The iconic glass roof was reopened, bathing the pool in natural light. So, next time you’re yearning for a dip or just a glimpse of architectural brilliance, you know where to go – Hallenbad City awaits!
