Tadeáš Hájek, a name whispered in the courts of emperors and etched in the stars. Here in Prague, Hájek’s legacy intertwines with the very fabric of the city. Born in this city on December 1, 1525, Tadeáš Hájek z Hájku, or Thaddeus Hagecius ab Hayek as he was sometimes known, was a man of many talents. He was a naturalist, an astronomer, and even the personal physician to Emperor Rudolph II. Hájek’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of science and mysticism. He delved into the mysteries of the cosmos, charting the movements of stars and planets. Yet, he also explored the world of divination, publishing “Aphorismi Metoposcopici” in 1561, a treatise on interpreting lines on the forehead. Hájek’s astronomical pursuits led him to correspond with the renowned Tycho Brahe. It was Hájek’s influence that brought Brahe, and later Kepler, to Prague under the patronage of Rudolph II. Imagine these brilliant minds gathered here, in this very city, pushing the boundaries of astronomical knowledge. Hájek’s contributions were not limited to the heavens. He also played a role in mapping the area around Prague in 1563. He even held a unique privilege from the emperor. No astrological prognostication could be printed in Prague without Hájek’s approval. In 1572, a supernova blazed across the constellation Cassiopeia. Hájek meticulously documented his observations of this celestial event, adding another significant chapter to his astronomical legacy. Remember, as you look up at the night sky, that Hájek, here in Prague, was one of the first to understand these cosmic wonders. His legacy lives on, not just in his writings, but also in the celestial bodies that bear his name: the lunar crater Hagecius and the asteroid 1995 Hajek.
