Imagine a hidden gem nestled north of Stanley Main Beach. This is Hairpin Beach. It is a gazetted beach on the eastern coast of Stanley peninsula. It is in Hong Kong’s Southern District.

Hairpin Beach offers stunning views. Look towards Shek O Peak and D’Aguilar Peak. They create a picturesque backdrop.

Let’s dive into the story of this unique place. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department manages Hairpin Beach. The Hong Kong Government oversees it. You will find barbecue pits here. They are perfect for a seaside picnic.

However, Hairpin Beach has an interesting quirk. It is currently not open for swimming. This is because there are no lifeguard facilities. The beach did not get its grading.

Once upon a time, Hairpin Beach faced challenges. In July 2000, oil pollution forced its closure. The Environmental Protection Department stepped in. They deemed the water quality safe again the next day. The beach reopened quickly. The water quality improved further. It reached a consistently good level.

In July 2016, a somber event occurred. A woman’s body was found floating offshore. The Marine Police recovered her. Investigations suggested the case was not suspicious.

Hairpin Beach has a history of low usage. In the winter of 2002, only one person visited daily on average. Due to this, lifeguard services ceased in March 2005.

Despite not being ideal for swimming, Hairpin Beach has charm. It is a small beach surrounded by trees and rugged rocks. The scenery is beautiful.

Hairpin Beach offers basic amenities. You can find BBQ pits, showers and toilets here.

If you are planning to film here, you will need permission. Contact the Southern District Office. A basic charge of $7,090 applies for the first four hours. Each subsequent four-hour block costs $1,990. A refundable deposit is also required.

Hairpin Beach is easily accessible. Take bus routes 6, 6A, 14, 73, 260 or 314. Alternatively, try minibus routes 16A, 16M or 16X.

Hairpin Beach might not be your typical swimming spot. But its unique history and scenic beauty make it worth a visit. It is a tranquil escape from the city.
