Can you even fathom the history woven into this very sculpture? Let me tell you a bit about this magnificent piece and the hands that crafted it. This, my dear friends, is the Haida Eagle and Frog Totem Pole, a captivating work of art carved by a master of his craft, Bill Reid. In 1986, Reid decided to bring to life a vision of an eagle holding a frog between its wings, a remarkable scene that reflects the intricate relationships in the natural realm. But there’s more to this pole than just a beautiful carving. The eagle, a powerful symbol of strength, grace, and vision, sits on top of the pole, symbolizing the watchful protector of the Haida people. The frog, a representation of fertility and abundance, symbolizes the Haida’s connection to the land, to nature, and to the cycle of life. To embody this intricate design, Reid brought in a talented team of carvers – Tim Boyko, Bill Bellis, Don Yeomans, and Doug Zilkie. Together, they spent a year meticulously carving every detail into the eight foot pole. They even added a smaller eagle on top of the large one, further amplifying the power and beauty of the sculpture, and showcasing the dedication and passion that went into its creation. This magnificent pole is not just a work of art, it’s a tribute to Haida culture, a reflection of their history and beliefs, and a physical representation of their connection to the land and to their ancestors. Every time you stand before this pole, remember the story it holds, the hands that crafted it, and the legacy it carries.
