Is it tranquility you seek? Then Häggvik is your answer. This suburb of Stockholm offers a peaceful escape. Häggvik may seem unassuming at first glance. But its natural beauty makes it perfect for a tranquil day outdoors. It is a great way to see areas outside central Stockholm.
Let’s venture past the ICA Maxi. We’ll go under the highway. You’ll find yourself at the Östra Järvafältet nature reserve. This expanse of forest, lakes, and trails stretches over 2500 acres. The area is rich in history. There are burial sites and evidence of ruins going back to the iron age. Today you can find cell service throughout the park. Well-preserved paths make it a low-stress place to explore.
Let’s start our day with a visit to Bögs Gård. This small working farm sits on the edge of the reserve. Stroll between the barns and pastures. Find the farm’s herd of ponies. Offer them a carrot. Or two. Or three. Give them a pet. Enjoy watching their playful antics.
Once you’ve had your fill of the farm, let’s head down one of the many paths. They branch out through the park. You can find a trail map on the sign boards. These are posted near the entrance. For the best views, walk along the east side of the Ravalen lake.
We can circumnavigate the whole lake. Or we can stop for a while at the campsite on the southeastern side. Let’s build a fire to keep warm. Or to cook up some classic camp food. Just down from the fire pit is a section of ice cut away for cold plunging. This is a quintessential Swedish activity. Remember to be careful. Come prepared with warm layers. Have a strong fire going. Don’t go alone.
If the great outdoors isn’t for you, we can visit Helena’s Café. It is a welcoming, cabin-like restaurant on the farm. They serve pastries, coffee, tea, and lunch options throughout the week. Bring a good book or a pack of cards. Cosy up indoors to warm up. Back in central Häggvik, you can find indoor padel courts. You can even find beach volleyball near the train station. Get together a group of friends for a game. Imagine you’re playing in warmer climes.
Further to the east, check out Edsbergs Slott. It is a small palace on the water. While the palace is closed in winter, you can still roam the grounds. Take in the view.
Looking past the highways and parking lots, Häggvik is a highlight of the Sollentuna Municipality. It boasts cultural history and natural beauty. On days when the hustle of central Stockholm seems daunting, simply hop on the pendeltåg. Explore the beautiful backyard that awaits you in Häggvik.
