How about a journey back to 1889. That’s when the Hafenamt, one of Cologne’s most beautiful landmarks, was built. We are standing before it now.

The Hafenamt is a testament to Cologne’s rich economic and architectural history. Architect Adam Sesterhenn designed the Hafenamt. Sesterhenn also designed the Krafthaus and Lokschuppen. Together, these three buildings form a remarkable trilogy.

Notice the Hafenamt’s two-tone brick facade. The arched windows evoke the Romanesque style. The square clock tower is especially pretty. It is a true gem.

In 2000, an expansion connected the Hafenamt to the Lokschuppen. This created a modern courtyard using glass and steel. Cologne architect Michael Zimmermann renovated the Hafenamt in 2014. He blended historical and modern architecture. The building now features ornate pillars and a curved staircase. These elements add to the office building’s unique charm on Harry-Blum-Platz.

Until 2014, the Hafenamt housed the Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG. This company managed Cologne’s ports and freight traffic. The Altes Hafenamt, as it is also known, stands as a cultural monument. It is listed as number 122 on Cologne’s list of cultural monuments.

The Hafenamt is more than just a beautiful building. It represents Cologne’s history as a major trading hub on the Rhine. Cologne’s location made it an influential merchant stronghold. Wholesalers controlled goods flowing from northern Italy to England.

Cologne became a free imperial city in 1475. It was a leading member of the Hanseatic League. This league gave merchants special privileges. Cologne’s central location made it a key intersection for trade routes. Its harbor was very important. Merchants built ties with other Hanseatic cities.

Even earlier, Cologne was a significant Roman settlement. In 50 AD, Agrippina the Younger had her birthplace declared a colonia. This granted it Roman city status. The city was then known as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensis.

The Rhine has always been vital to Cologne’s growth. In the 16th century, people noticed the Rhine’s riverbed shifting. Cologne fortified the bank to prevent breaches. This project continued for over 250 years.

Today, the Hafenamt stands as a reminder of Cologne’s past. It has witnessed centuries of trade, architectural innovation, and urban development. The building is located at Harry-Blum-Platz 2. It is part of the Rheinauhafen district. Take a moment to appreciate this beautiful building. It connects Cologne’s past with its present.
