Have you heard of a deity who is a sea god, a blacksmith patron, and a protector of warriors? This is Hachiman. Today, we stand before Hachiman Shrine. Shinto shrines dedicated to the kami Hachiman dot Japan. Around 44,000 Hachiman shrines exist.

Hachiman shrines honor Emperor Ojin. He reigned from 390-415 AD. People believe he became deified as Hachiman. Hachiman is the Shinto God of War. He protects warriors during battles. Samurai needed food and armor. So, he became a sea deity, a rice field deity, and a blacksmithing patron.

Omiya Hachimangu Shrine in Tokyo is a significant one. It is the third-largest Shinto shrine in Tokyo’s 23 wards. Meiji Shrine and Yasukuni Shrine are larger. Omiya Hachimangu Shrine is famous for protecting women. It watches over them during childbirth and while raising children. Many women and parents visit to pray.

Minamoto no Yoriyoshi founded Omiya Hachimangu in 1063. He was an influential feudal lord in the Kanto District. The shrine enshrines Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Chubai. It also enshrines Hachiman.

The main festival happens every year on September 15. Another festival is the Sakura Matsuri. It takes place during cherry blossom season. Bonfires light up the cherry blossoms at night. Zenpukuji River Green Park sits next to the shrine. The park boasts about 400 cherry trees along the river. You can enjoy cherry blossom viewing at both spots. The Sakura Matsuri occurs from late March to early April. The exact date relies on the weather and when the flowers bloom.

Another notable Hachiman Shrine is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura. People reach its main buildings by climbing many stairs. The shrine features two ponds. They once had pink and white lotus flowers. They symbolized the Genji and Taira clans. Minamoto no Yoshitsune defeated the Taira clan.

Another Hachiman shrine is Osaki Hachimangu in Sendai. Date Masamune ordered its construction in 1607. He was the founder of Sendai. Its main building is a National Treasure. It is an example of Azuchi-Momoyama style architecture.

Citizens of Sendai prayed at Osaki Hachimangu for Yuzuru Hanyu’s victory. He is a figure skater. His photo was placed at the shrine’s main gates.

The main Hachiman shrine is Usa-Jingu in Oita Prefecture. It was founded in the 8th century. The current buildings date from the mid-19th century. Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto and Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka are also famous.
