HacDC is more than just a hackerspace it’s a community a workshop a hub for brilliant minds. It’s America’s second-oldest hackerspace founded in 2008.
HacDC isn’t just some techie hideout. It’s a non-profit organization. HacDC members strive to improve the world. They do this by creatively rethinking technology. They break build and sometimes even abuse technology. All this is done in the pursuit of greater knowledge. They then repurpose this knowledge to create new things.
The space itself is fascinating. Located on the second floor of St Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church. It’s a unique blend of old and new spirituality and technology. Inside you’ll find a workshop brimming with tools. There are 3D printers a soldering station and electronic diagnostic equipment. A basement room houses even heavier tools. This includes a drill press a CNC mill a sheet metal bender and an optical table.
HacDC offers free public workshops. They cover subjects like Microcontroller Programming 3D Printing and Computer-Aided Design. They even have workshops on Amateur Radio and Linux. Members bring a wide range of skills. You’ll find artists scientists engineers and everyone in between. This results in extraordinary collaborations. Some of their work has even appeared in local art exhibits and performances.
But HacDC is more than just workshops. They’ve undertaken ambitious projects. These include work on an electron microscope and a robot for an optical table. Past projects include Project Laser and Byzantium. Their funding has also fluctuated. In 2016 they received considerably more funding than in 2015.
