Didn’t you know that Shenzhen was once just a small market town? Ha Yeung Shan overlooks a region that has transformed remarkably. Shenzhen’s story is one of incredible growth and change. It is a place that evolved from tranquil fishing villages into a dynamic metropolis.

Shenzhen was designated as China’s first Special Economic Zone in 1980. This pivotal decision spurred unprecedented economic development. The designation attracted foreign investment and sparked rapid industrialization. Ha Yeung Shan perhaps watched over these developments.

Shenzhen quickly became known for its “Shenzhen speed.” This term reflected its rapid growth rate. Wages and living standards rose significantly higher than the average in China. People flocked to Shenzhen to work in its burgeoning industries.

The city became a hub for electronics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. It also produced building materials and processed foods. This industrial boom stimulated agricultural production in the surrounding areas. Farmers produced poultry, livestock, and vegetables to meet the growing demand.

Shenzhen became an experimental zone for economic reform. Policies initiated here were later adopted throughout China. These policies aimed to smooth the transition to a market economy. The establishment of stock markets was one such measure.

Railways connect Shenzhen to Guangzhou, Beijing, and Fujian. Expressways link the city to other coastal hubs. A major international airport and large seaport container terminals facilitate global trade. These infrastructure developments supported Shenzhen’s economic expansion.

Shenzhen also prioritizes education. The city founded its own universities and colleges. Notable institutions like Peking University and Tsinghua University established branch campuses here. This focus on education fueled innovation and development.

Interestingly, Shenzhen is known as a “paradise of girls.” More than half of its population is under 30 and mostly female. Many young women from the countryside migrate here for work opportunities.

However, Shenzhen also faces challenges. The city once had a high crime rate. There were more police here than anywhere else in China except Beijing. Crime cases jumped significantly in the early 2000s.

Today, Shenzhen is a major manufacturing center. It is home to successful high-tech companies. BYD, Huawei, and Tencent are some of the prominent names based here. The city hosts the China Hi-tech Expo annually.

China’s first stock exchange opened in Shenzhen in 1990. This further solidified its position as an economic powerhouse. Shanghai opened its stock exchange a year later.

In 2009, Shenzhen was designated as a UNESCO City of Design. This recognizes its vibrant and innovative culture. The city continues to evolve and adapt, remaining a key player in China’s economic landscape. From Ha Yeung Shan, you can witness the culmination of this incredible journey. A transformation from a small town to a global city.
