Gazing at the intricate roof of Ha Ko Tan Tin Hau Temple, can you imagine the skilled artisans who pieced together its dragon fish and geometric patterns? This isn’t just any temple. It is a monument, officially recognized in 1982. The Ha Ko Tan Tin Hau Temple stands as a testament to the reverence for Tin Hau, the Goddess of the Sea. The Tai clan, deeply rooted in this area, built this temple. Legend whispers of a mystical red stone, shaped like an incense burner, found on the shores of Causeway Bay. The Tai clan believed it was a gift from Tin Hau herself. They first built a small shrine. This shrine became a beacon for boat dwellers, a place of solace and hope amidst the unpredictable sea. As the shrine’s popularity surged, the Tai clan rallied the community. They raised funds and transformed the humble shrine into the magnificent Ha Ko Tan Tin Hau Temple we see today. Inside, time seems to stand still. A bell, cast in 1747, during the reign of Qianlong, resonates with the echoes of centuries past. Look closely at the name plaque above the entrance. It, along with the poetic couplets flanking it, were added during renovations in 1868, under the reign of Tongzhi. The temple is a treasure trove of relics from the Qing dynasty, whispering stories of devotion and artistry. Plaques, couplets, an incense burner, stone lions, and a carved stone offering table all bear witness to the temple’s rich history. The temple’s architecture is a story in itself. Two halls, flanked by side halls, create a sense of balance and harmony. Within the main hall, altars pay homage not only to Tin Hau, but also to Bao Kung (Judge Bao) and the God of Wealth. The roof ridges are a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Dragons scramble for a pearl against a backdrop of geometric patterns. At either end, dragon fish add a touch of whimsy. The rear ridge is adorned with Shiwan ceramic figurines. These figurines depict scenes from traditional Chinese operas, adding a touch of theatrical flair to the temple’s grandeur. The ‘cut-and-paste shard works’ that embellish some of the decorations and couplets are truly unique. They represent a rare artistic technique, seldom seen in Hong Kong. The Ha Ko Tan Tin Hau Temple isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, artistry, and the enduring power of tradition.
