What secrets do these walls hold? We stand before Gyōsei Junior and Senior High School, a venerable institution steeped in history and tradition. Gyōsei High School isn’t just any school. It’s a prestigious academy, a place where young minds have been shaped since 1888. Founded by Marianist missionaries at the behest of Bishop Pierre-Marie Osouf, Gyōsei was originally located in Tsukiji. The school has weathered significant storms, including the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 and the upheaval of World War II. These events forced a relocation to its current home in Chiyoda. Gyōsei is more than just a high school. It’s part of a larger educational family, a network that includes a kindergarten and elementary school. This provides a continuous path for boys from the age of 3 to 18. The school maintains a strong connection with Sophia University, a Jesuit institution. Many Gyōsei graduates go on to study at Sophia. Gyōsei even recruits some of its religious studies teachers from the university. Interestingly, French has been taught at Gyōsei since its inception, alongside English. For a time, students could even earn a French Baccalauréat. Now, imagine walking these halls alongside alumni like fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto, poet Mitsuharu Kaneko, or actor Kento Kaku. Gyōsei has produced a remarkable array of graduates who have made their mark in various fields. From the arts to athletics, Gyōsei’s influence extends far beyond its walls. Gyōsei Junior and Senior High School stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and the rich tapestry of its history.
