Tucked away in Bohnice, Prague 8, near the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital, stands Gymnázium Ústavní. This isn’t your average school. Gymnázium Ústavní shares its grounds with a primary school and a dining hall, creating a unique educational hub. The school opened its doors in 1990, initially offering both multi-year and four-year programs. Just a year later, in 1991, the Czech-Italian section was established, adding an international flair to the curriculum. Today, Gymnázium Ústavní offers two main study programs. There’s the standard eight-year program and a unique six-year bilingual program. In this special program, some subjects are taught in Italian, immersing students in a new language and culture. Gymnázium Ústavní is not just about academics. The school offers various extracurricular activities to enrich student life. These include educational programs, trips abroad, and technical excursions, broadening horizons and fostering a sense of discovery. The facilities here are impressive. Students have access to computer labs, science labs for chemistry, biology, and physics, specialized classrooms, a gym, and even outdoor sports facilities. A renovated dining hall provides meals and a dedicated student lounge offers comfortable seating. There’s even school-wide Wi-Fi, ping-pong tables, and mini foosball for downtime. Gymnázium Ústavní has a history of academic excellence. Students regularly achieve top rankings in district-level math competitions like the Mathematical Olympiad. In 2016, the school’s team achieved eighth place in the Náboj mathematics and physics competition, outperforming renowned schools like PORG and Mensa Gymnasium. The school also boasts a first-place win in the 2015/2016 Best in English international competition, a feat that earned them new computer equipment. In 2024, Gymnázium Ústavní ranked an impressive 7th globally in the Best in English competition, out of 311 schools. Gymnázium Ústavní also fosters a vibrant extracurricular scene. The annual graduation ball is held in the grand Lucerna Hall. Christmas academies feature student performances, and in 2016, even hosted the famous Czech rapper Leoš Mareš. Although paused during the pandemic, these academies resumed in 2023. The school even had an “Ekotým,” a group of student volunteers who cared for the school’s environment. Some notable teachers have graced the halls of Gymnázium Ústavní. Eva Farfánová Barriosová, a former archaeologist specializing in South America, taught here until 2019. Josef Soukal, author of literature textbooks and chairman of the Czech Teachers’ Association, also shared his expertise here. Musician Stanislav Mistr, known for his pop variations of Czech mass, and Dagmar Zázvůrková, a singer and actress, also contributed to the school’s rich tapestry of educators. Gymnázium Ústavní isn’t just a school, it’s a community, a place of learning, growth, and achievement, nestled in the heart of Prague.
