How did a place like Gutshaus Andershof, once a bustling agricultural estate, become a part of the city of Stralsund? You might be surprised to learn that Gutshaus Andershof wasn’t always under Stralsund jurisdiction. Until 1928, it existed as an independent entity, one of the many “Stadtdörfer” or city villages, that surrounded Stralsund. These city villages were closely tied to Stralsund, but maintained their own unique identities. Gutshaus Andershof itself was a sizable estate, encompassing 144 hectares of land. In 1928, Dr. Reinhold Riehn, the owner at the time, leased the estate to Dr. Christoph Schütte. This marked a period of transition for Gutshaus Andershof, as it shifted hands and its role within the community began to change. Eventually, the estate was incorporated into the city of Stralsund, its story becoming interwoven with the larger urban narrative. Today, Gutshaus Andershof stands as a testament to that history. The building itself, although now used for residential purposes, still reflects its grand past. While the bustling farmyard and most of the outbuildings are gone, echoes of the estate’s agricultural past can still be seen. Rows of former worker’s cottages stand as a reminder of the people who lived and worked on the land. A few old trees and the village pond hint at the presence of a once-grand park, which was accessed by a grand staircase on the left side of the building. This is where our journey through time takes us next, to a place where nature’s beauty meets a somber history.
