This unassuming structure plays a crucial role in Vienna’s renowned water supply system. The Gütenbachdücker is part of the Second Vienna Spring Water Main, an engineering feat completed in 1910 under Mayor Karl Lueger. Imagine, over 180 kilometers of pipeline stretching from the Hochschwab Massif in Styria to Vienna, bringing fresh mountain spring water to the city’s inhabitants. The Gütenbachdücker is one of 19 inverted siphons along this route. These siphons, based on the principle of communicating vessels, allow the pipeline to navigate the varied terrain, crossing rivers and valleys. The Second Vienna Spring Water Main was a monumental undertaking, costing 100 million Crowns and requiring the labor of 10,000 workmen. They constructed over 100 aqueducts and these ingenious siphons, some stretching up to 2.5 kilometers. The Gütenbachdücker, like the other siphons, ensures a continuous flow, allowing the water to travel from its source to Vienna in approximately 36 hours. The inauguration of the Second Vienna Spring Water Main on December 2, 1910, was a grand affair, presided over by Emperor Francis Joseph I himself. The fountains in City Hall Park flowed with mountain spring water for the first time, marking a new era for Vienna’s water supply. The Second Vienna Spring Water Main, with the Gütenbachdücker as a key component, not only ensured a reliable water supply but also improved public health. This allowed for the construction of public baths and swimming pools throughout the city.
