Can you imagine a ship almost 200 meters long needing repair? Where would it go in the heart of Stockholm? Right here, we stand before the impressive Gustav V-dockan. This massive drydock, carved into the bedrock of Beckholmen island, is a testament to Stockholm’s rich maritime history. The Gustav V-dockan was inaugurated in 1927, named after the reigning monarch. The Swedish Navy needed a place to service its largest vessels, and this dock, originally 152 meters long, fit the bill.

In the mid-1940s, the dock underwent a significant expansion, stretching to its current impressive length of 197 meters. That’s almost two football fields! This engineering marvel cuts through nearly the entire island of Beckholmen. It has played a pivotal role in Stockholm’s shipbuilding and repair industry ever since. Interestingly, the Gustav V-dockan has also been witness to remarkable historical events. In 1961, it became the temporary home of a very special guest – the salvaged Vasa warship. Can you picture the scene?

After 333 years submerged in the chilly waters, the Vasa was carefully brought to the surface. It was then towed to this very spot, the Gustav V-dockan, for its initial archaeological investigation. Today, while the Navy has moved its operations elsewhere, the Gustav V-dockan isn’t just a relic of the past. It’s a bustling hub of activity. Today, Stockholms Reparationsvarv operates the Gustav V-dockan. They handle all manner of ship repairs and maintenance for a variety of vessels. This dock is a symbol of Stockholm’s enduring connection to the sea. It’s a reminder that even amidst the bustling city, the echoes of maritime history are never far away.
