Doesn’t it feel great to find a place where history whispers on the breeze? Welcome to Gunning Park. This park offers a peaceful escape. It is nestled in the charming town of Gunning. Gunning itself boasts a rich history dating back to the early 19th century.

Gunning was originally home to the Gundungurra and Ngunnawal people. Europeans explored the area in 1820. Settlement began the following year by Hamilton Hume. Hume and William Hovell started their expedition to Port Phillip Bay from here in 1824. They were searching for new grazing land where Melbourne is now sited.

Gunning grew as a service center for surrounding farms. Merino sheep farming dominated the area. The Main Southern railway line arrived in 1875. The Hume Highway by-pass was completed on 5 April 1993. This allowed the town to develop a more rural lifestyle.

While we’re here at Gunning Park, imagine the bustling town in earlier days. Picture horse and bullock-drawn wagons navigating the wide main streets. These streets were built wide to accommodate this traffic. Think of the Telegraph Hotel. It stands as a reminder of the establishment of the main trunk telegraph line.

Perhaps children are playing nearby. They might be laughing as they swing on the Capital Swing set. Maybe they climb and explore the majestic Treetops Skytower at Endeavour Park playground.

The Endeavour Park playground is a vibrant space for everyone. It was funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. The Upper Lachlan Shire Council also contributed. This inclusive playground shows a commitment to the future. Children can grow up valuing inclusive play and community togetherness.

Today, Gunning offers a peaceful escape. You can explore the history at the Pye Cottage Museum. This slab hut cottage displays household items and agricultural tools. They tell the story of the area’s wool heritage. You can also visit the Picture House Gallery and Bookshop. It is located in the historic Coronation Theatre.

Consider visiting the nearby Fossil Rock. It contains prehistoric fossil leaf deposits from 40 million years ago. You can also explore the Tablelands Food and Wine Trail. It showcases delicious local produce.

As we stand here in Gunning Park, reflect on the town’s journey. From its indigenous roots to its role in colonial exploration. From its agricultural past to its present-day charm. Gunning continues to be a delightful place.
