“A library serving 100000 Loudoun County residents?” I overheard a visitor saying. That’s right. You are standing in front of the Gum Spring Library. It is a cornerstone of knowledge and community in Stone Ridge.
Gum Spring Library stands proudly at 24600 Millstream Drive. It intersects Stone Spring Boulevard and Route 50. This library isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub of learning and discovery.
The Gum Spring Library opened its doors on February 23 with a grand celebration. The opening took place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. It quickly became a beloved spot. Over 6500 people visited it within 6 hours. Impressively 1106 new library cards were issued. Even more impressively 14000 items were checked out that day.
This 40000 square-foot facility is the largest of Loudoun County’s libraries. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors funded Gum Spring Library with $10.5 million.
Inside the Gum Spring Library, you’ll find a unique ceramic mosaic. Local tile artist Joan Gardiner created it specifically for this library. The library spans two stories. It provides separate entrances for other businesses in the building.
There are special areas for young children, teens, and adults. Public computers offer internet access and printing. Wireless internet is available for personal devices. A large meeting room accommodates 150 people. There is also a conference room and five private study rooms. The Gum Spring Library added 80000 new materials to the Loudoun County Public Library’s collection.
Educational and cultural programs are available for all ages. Self check-out stations and payment kiosks add convenience. An elevator and stairs provide access to the second floor. The second floor offers an expansive view of the area’s wetlands.
Local residents played a role in the Gum Spring Library’s design. Teenagers from nearby middle and high schools participated in a Teen Focus Group. They discussed the Teen Area with architects and library staff. The Friends of the Gum Spring Library also contributed. They worked hard to raise money through walks and tile sales.
The teen area is designed to be a welcoming space. It is meant to be a place for research, group projects, or just hanging out.
