“Can’t you see how alike they are?” That’s what Allan Runefelt seems to ask with his sculpture Gubben med geten. This artwork, depicting an old man with a goat, has a fascinating story. Let’s explore it together.

Gubben med geten isn’t just one statue. It’s actually a series of bronze sculptures. The artist created several copies. You can find them in different locations across Sweden. These include Västertorp, Båstad, Gävle, Kristianstad, Solna and Örebro.

Allan Runefelt, born in Stockholm in 1922, was a talented sculptor and artist. He studied at the Royal University College of Fine Arts. He also traveled extensively. These travels influenced his art. Runefelt died in 2005.

The idea for Gubben med geten came to Runefelt during a trip to France. While sketching, he observed a resemblance between old men and goats. This observation sparked the concept for his famous sculpture.

Fritz H Eriksson played a key role in bringing Gubben med geten to life. He saw Runefelt’s sketches from France. Eriksson commissioned the artwork for Västertorp.

Runefelt created the sculpture in 1952. Initially, it was intended for a wooded area. However, Runefelt felt it was important for the sculpture to be accessible to the public. In 1955, the first Gubben med geten was placed on the sidewalk in Västertorp. This allowed many people to see and appreciate it.

Gubben med geten quickly became popular. Children especially loved it. The sculpture shows an old man gently leading a goat. It evokes a sense of companionship and simplicity.

The Gubben med geten sculpture in Gävle is located at the intersection of Drottninggatan and Norra Kungsgatan. A photograph from the 1980s shows the statue in its urban setting. This photograph is part of the Länsmuseet Gävleborg collection.

Another goat sculpture by Allan Runefelt is Geten Pelle. It stands near Bredängstorget in Bredäng, Stockholm.

Allan Runefelt’s works can be found in various museums. These include Moderna Museet and Västerås Art Museum. His art is appreciated throughout Sweden.

So, as you stand before Gubben med geten, consider the artist’s vision. Think about his travels in France. Reflect on the simple connection between man and animal. This sculpture is more than just bronze. It is a reminder to find the familiar in the unexpected.
