The Guarulhos Municipal City Council/Hall wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. Its story begins in the mid-16th century, on December 8, 1560, when Jesuit priest Manuel de Paiva established a small settlement. It was named Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a name that reflects the deep religious roots of the region. The settlement served a vital purpose. It protected the burgeoning São Paulo de Piratininga Village from the Tamoio indigenous tribe. Over the centuries, Guarulhos grew. Its strategic location, bordered by the Tietê and Cabuçu rivers, made it an important hub. In 1880, Guarulhos gained its independence from São Paulo and adopted the name Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Guarulhos. This marked a significant step in its journey towards becoming the city we know today. The name was later simplified to Guarulhos in 1906. The 20th century brought rapid transformation to Guarulhos. The arrival of the railroad and the establishment of a power electricity system propelled the city into a new era. Industries flourished, drawing workers from across the region. This led to a population boom, transforming Guarulhos into a major industrial center. The Guarulhos Municipal City Council/Hall witnessed this growth. It became the heart of the city’s governance, navigating the challenges and triumphs of a rapidly changing world. In 1945, another pivotal event occurred: the São Paulo Air Force Base was relocated to Guarulhos’ Cumbica neighborhood. This paved the way for the city’s future as a major transportation hub. Then, in 1985, the Cumbica Airport opened its doors. Now known as the São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, it’s one of the busiest airports in Latin America. This solidified Guarulhos’ place on the world map. Today, the Guarulhos Municipal City Council/Hall stands as a symbol of the city’s resilience and progress.
