“A cathedral of nature.” That’s how I often describe the Gruta da Pedra to first-time visitors. Here, in the heart of Brazil’s Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira, or PETAR, lies a natural wonder that dwarfs even man-made giants. Gruta Casa de Pedra, meaning “House of Stone Cave”, boasts the world’s largest cave opening. Imagine a portal so colossal it could swallow Trump Tower whole. That’s roughly 705 feet of sheer rock face, a breathtaking spectacle carved by time and nature. PETAR itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a testament to its incredible biodiversity. The park protects a vast swathe of the Atlantic rainforest and harbors over 350 known caves. Gruta da Pedra, while not the most frequented, offers an unforgettable experience. Light floods the massive main hall, a space stretching over 9,500 feet long. A powerful river courses through the cavern, its waters reflecting the ancient stalactites and stalagmites clinging to the steep walls. These silent sentinels, some hundreds of years old, bear witness to the cave’s long history. While the cave’s entrance is easily accessible near the Casa da Pedra visitor center, the journey to the park requires some planning. A 10-mile dirt road dotted with wooden bridges leads from the colonial village of Iporanga to the center. From there, guided hiking trails are available. Trust me, good walking shoes are essential for exploring this natural wonder. I highly recommend spending a few days in PETAR. It truly is a geological gem.
