Consider the story etched into this weathered stone. This is the Gruhe. It is more than just a stone bench. The Gruhe is a silent witness to centuries of Stuttgart’s history.

What exactly is a Gruhe? It is a historical stone bench. People used it for setting down and picking up heavy loads. Imagine weary travelers arriving in Stuttgart. They would set their burdens upon this very stone to rest a moment.

Stuttgart’s history stretches back to the 10th century. The city began as a stud farm. Duke Herzog Liudolf von Schwaben founded it in 950 AD. He called it Stutengarten. That means “mare garden.”

By the 13th century, Stuttgart transitioned from a stud farm to a medieval town. It became the official residence of the Count of Wurttemberg. By the 15th century, Stuttgart was the capital city.

The Gruhe probably saw countless people. They came and went during Stuttgart’s rise.

The 16th century brought decline. The Thirty Years’ War and French invasions hit Stuttgart hard. Recovery did not come quickly. But Stuttgart persevered.

The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century marked a turning point. Stuttgart became the capital of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg in 1805. The city saw rapid expansion.

In 1886, Robert Bosch opened his first workshop in Stuttgart. Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile here. Stuttgart became known as the “Cradle of the Automobile.”

The Gruhe stood here. People saw gas lighting introduced in 1845. They saw the first gas explosion in 1865. This tragic event killed four people.

The 20th century brought war. Stuttgart suffered 53 air raids during World War II. Much of the city was destroyed. The Gruhe may have been damaged. But it survived.

After the war, Stuttgart rebuilt. The city became a center for industry and innovation. Today, Stuttgart is a major industrial hub. It is home to companies like Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

Think about all the changes the Gruhe has witnessed. From a small stud farm to a modern metropolis. The Gruhe remains a tangible link to Stuttgart’s past. A reminder of simpler times and enduring strength. As you stand here take a moment to appreciate this piece of history. The Gruhe is a connection to Stuttgart’s story.
