Deep within the Königsforst, a secret sleeps. This secret, my friends, is Grube Copernicus. Grube Copernicus isn’t a person, but a forgotten mine. It whispers tales of a time when this quiet forest echoed with the clang of pickaxes and the rumble of carts. Grube Copernicus was a non-ferrous metal ore mine. It was part of the Bensberg ore district, right here in Cologne. The mine’s claim extended across this very forest near the Rennweg. Let’s journey back to October 2nd, 1857. A man named Gustav Roetzel filed a prospecting application under the name “Sultan”. He later added two more claims: Sultan II and Sultan III. Initially, the site wasn’t deemed worthy of mining. But Roetzel persisted. He continued his exploratory work, eventually leading to a new application and the granting of mining rights. On October 27th, 1860, Grube Copernicus was officially born. The mine was granted rights to extract lead and zinc ores. Today, silent witnesses remain. Two large spoil heaps and several sinkholes mark the landscape. These are the scars of Grube Copernicus. Sadly, the specifics of the mining operations here at Grube Copernicus remain a mystery. The surviving documents offer no details about the daily life of the miners or the challenges they faced. We can only imagine the back-breaking labor and the hopes they carried for a brighter future. Grube Copernicus stands as a reminder of Cologne’s rich industrial past. It’s a hidden gem, waiting to be rediscovered amidst the rustling leaves and towering trees of the Königsforst.
