A gaping maw in the earth. That’s the first impression of the Grotta presso la Ferrovia per Sesana. It’s not a grand entrance. It’s more of a sudden drop. A dark invitation into the Carso’s hidden depths.

This cave near the disused railway to Sesana has a long history. Discovered or at least noted by Eugenio Boegan in the last century it was properly surveyed in 1963. That’s when its secrets started to be revealed.

The entrance is dramatic. A deep pothole plunges you into the earth. The descent is steep and rocky. You’ll pass through three distinct levels. At 3 meters down a narrow passage opens to a smaller shaft. Another 5 meters down and the main chamber awaits.

The cave itself isn’t vast. Its planimetric development is only 34 meters. Its total depth is just 13 meters. But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty. Inside the cave is something truly exceptional. Imagine the stalactites and stalagmites. They hang like frozen waterfalls. They rise from the floor like ancient, petrified trees. This cave is a fossil. Its formations are untouched.

The descriptions speak of incredible formations. Curtains of crystalline white against dark rock. Stalactites several meters long. Stalagmites so dense they nearly block the passage. This is a place of wonder a small gem hidden in the Karst landscape.

The journey through the Grotta presso la Ferrovia per Sesana isn’t long. But it’s a journey into another world. A world of silent beauty and geological history. A world worth discovering.
