Descending into the earth, we find ourselves before Grotta GAG. This isn’t just any cave. Grotta GAG is a thrilling subterranean world, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Trieste’s Karst region. Its official name is Grotta GAG, but it’s also known locally as 5487VG in the regional cave registry. Grotta GAG first revealed its secrets in 2011 when its entrance coordinates were precisely recorded. The entrance sits at an altitude of 314 meters above sea level. Prepare to be amazed by the sheer scale of this natural wonder. Grotta GAG boasts a horizontal development of 104 meters and plunges to a depth of 66 meters, creating a total descent of 66 meters from its highest point to the bottom. The journey begins with a descent into the main access shaft. Just two meters down, you’ll encounter a cluster of wedged boulders, hinting at the geological forces that shaped this cavern. To the south, a small, beautifully decorated cavern beckons, adorned with intricate formations. However, this chamber offers no further passage. Turning north, you’ll enter a much larger space. The floor is a mix of loose rocks and earth. Beyond this, narrow passages lead to the edge of a vertical drop. Descending this shaft, you emerge into another cavern. Here, a majestic six-meter-high column conceals the entrance to a small pozzetto, a vertical shaft leading to yet another tiny cavern. This chamber is a spectacle of delicate columns and stalactites. Continuing, a 10-meter drop brings you to a larger chamber. In the center, a massive stalagmite rises 2.5 meters high. Along the northern wall, a series of small drops leads to the deepest point of the accessible cave, 42 meters down. Opposite this chamber, a low, wide passage expands as you proceed, leading to the most breathtaking part of Grotta GAG. To the northeast, the ceiling dips. Beyond this point lies a cavern pierced by a chimney. This chimney has been explored to its highest point where it closes off. The cavern floor is covered in fallen rocks draped in stunning flowstone. This area, marked as point 10 on the cave map, holds further secrets. Among the rocks, two consecutive shafts, partially blocked by debris and connected by natural bridges, descend to a lower level. At the bottom of the second shaft, two narrow passages await. One leads to a small chamber. The other, impassable, emits a noticeable draft of air. A dropped stone falls for about five meters, suggesting a deeper, unexplored void. Any attempt to excavate this passage would be both difficult and dangerous. Grotta GAG is a testament to the power of nature, a subterranean labyrinth of wonder.
