A cool, damp breeze whispers secrets from the earth. Here, before us, lies Grotta fra i due Muretti, nestled 1.3 kilometers west-northwest of Monte Franco’s peak, near the Slovenian border. Grotta fra i due Muretti translates to “Cave between two small walls.” This cave is a hidden gem of the Carso Triestino. It’s more than just a hole in the ground. It is a time capsule holding geological and historical echoes. Its official designation in the cave registry is number 6103. The entrance, precisely located on December 31, 2019, sits at an elevation of 323 meters above sea level. Grotta fra i due Muretti is a modest cave with a planimetric development of 28 meters and a depth of 5 meters. Imagine descending a small drop of just over a meter and a half. This drop, formed by a fracture running north-northwest to south-southeast, leads into a gently sloping gallery. This gallery initially runs almost north-south before shifting to northwest-southeast. Its barrel-vaulted ceiling hints at an ancient fluvial past, perhaps a time when water carved this space. The walls are remarkably smooth and uniform, a stark contrast to the subtly concretioned ceiling and floor. As you venture deeper into Grotta fra i due Muretti, the cave’s morphology becomes more complex. Large collapses, cemented by calcite, create an obstacle course of sorts. A chimney reaches almost to the surface, a reminder of the forces that shaped this place. In the southeastern branch, a potential continuation of the cave is blocked by a significant earthen deposit. Towards the back, a low passage on the right leads to a parallel chamber adorned with concretions, connected to the main gallery by a small window.
