Lost for decades, Grotta Ferfoglia was rediscovered. This cave holds secrets and stories. It is located not far from Prosecco near Trieste.

Grotta Ferfoglia is small. Its planimetric development is just 14.5 meters. The depth is 12.6 meters. The bottom lies at 244.4 meters above sea level.

The Grotta Ferfoglia’s main entrance is accurate. This was determined on February 20, 2016. The geographic area is the Carso Triestino. The municipality is Trieste. Coordinates place it precisely.

In July 1896, explorers from the Club Touristi Triestini ventured into Grotta Ferfoglia. They added it to their registry as number 66. Later, the Alpina delle Giulie also cataloged it. They assigned it the current number. After the initial exploration, farmers closed it. This likely happened after land clearing in the 1920s.

For decades, speleologists sought Grotta Ferfoglia. It seemed destined to remain lost forever. However, Luciano Luisa’s perseverance paid off. Luisa is an active speleologist. He works with the CGEB. For many months, he watched air movements near Prosecco. He found a spot that seemed promising.

Excavation began in late summer. A team from the Commissione Grotte dug. After 111 years, they entered the cave again. They bypassed a narrow passage. This had stopped the original CTT explorers. The team then updated the survey.

Pino Guidi reported the rediscovery. His report appeared in La Gazzetta dello speleologo. The news marked a significant event for local speleologists.

Grotta Ferfoglia may be small. Yet its rediscovery highlights the dedication. It shows the persistence of those who explore the depths. The cave had been opened. It was then lost. Now it is accessible again. It is available for further study.
