Did you know that the Grotta di Guerra del Monte Babiza holds secrets from a time long past? This isn’t just any cave entrance. It’s a portal to a hidden world. We stand 186 meters above sea level near Aurisina Santa Croce. This location gives us a unique glimpse into history.

The Grotta di Guerra del Monte Babiza is a modest cavity. It features a 1.5-meter access shaft. This shaft leads to a sub-horizontal internal gallery. Imagine soldiers seeking refuge here. They found shelter within the cool, damp earth.

To reach this hidden entrance, we start near the former Lega school. This school is located on the provincial road between Aurisina and Santa Croce. From there, we take a white road. It veers left toward Santa Croce. We walk 220 meters. Then, continuing on the same road, we turn left again for 160 meters. Finally, in the woods to our left, only a few meters away, lies the Grotta di Guerra del Monte Babiza.

Another path begins at the school in Santa Croce. A dirt road leads toward the town. After 120 meters, we turn right into the woods. Fifteen meters uphill, we find two entrances to the cave.

Part of the Grotta di Guerra del Monte Babiza is artificial. These modifications likely date back to 1917. A well-preserved inscription bears witness to this era. The southeastern entrance is entirely artificial. It opens into a 10-meter-long artificial gallery. This gallery leads to a natural cavern. A large wall with a small portal separates it from the second entrance.

The second entrance features a partially natural shaft. Nearby, a trench acts as a moat. It allows access via a steep slope. Imagine the effort it took to carve these passages. Soldiers sought protection from the ravages of war.

A branch extends laterally from the cavern. This branch spans eight meters. It ends in a detrital obstruction. From the second entrance, a short gallery leads to another circular cavern. It is about six meters in diameter. Three short branches extend from it. These branches showcase diverse calcite formations.

Close your eyes and imagine the scene. It is 1917. Soldiers are hastily digging and fortifying this cave. They seek refuge from the war raging above. The Grotta di Guerra del Monte Babiza offered a sanctuary. The cool, damp earth provided some comfort. Today, we can still sense their presence.

The Grotta di Guerra del Monte Babiza is more than just a cave. It is a testament to human resilience. It is a reminder of the past. It connects us to those who sought shelter here. As we leave this place, let us remember the stories etched within its walls.
