Grotta delle due Colonne

Deep within the earth, near the village of Aurisina, lies the Grotta delle due Colonne. This intriguing cave, whose name translates to “Cave of the Two Columns,” takes its name from two prominent columns located at the start of Aurisina. To find this hidden gem, follow the provincial road from Prosecco towards Aurisina. Look for the two columns that mark the beginning of the village. A small road branches off to the right. Follow this road north for about a hundred meters until you reach the power line. Look for pylon number 35. From there, head west along the path that follows the power line. After a short walk through the vegetation, the cave’s entrance, often concealed by branches and tree trunks, appears on the right side of the path. The Grotta delle due Colonne features a fascinating array of geological formations. Upon entering, a narrow passage descends five meters into the first chamber. Stalactites and delicate cave flowers adorn the walls. A large flowstone formation dominates the west wall. This main chamber offers multiple paths to explore. A narrow fissure to the west quickly becomes impassable due to concretion. A wider passage to the north, also blocked by stalactites, hints at further depths. A low opening to the northeast slopes upward, filled with earth. The most interesting continuation lies to the east, where a passage descends steeply in a north-south direction. It eventually ends among formations and earth. Finally, a 45-degree slope to the south, between walls covered in concretions, leads to the cave’s bottom. This final chamber, smaller than the first, boasts a high ceiling adorned with stalactites. Two short passages branch out from this chamber, passable at the bottom but nearly closed off at the top by flowstone and concretions. These passages lead to no further continuations, marking the end of the explorable part of Grotta delle due Colonne.
