Deep beneath the surface, where sunlight fades and the air grows cool, lies the Grotta del Pastino. A hidden world awaits those who venture into its depths. The Grotta del Pastino is a cave near Trieste. It holds a special place in the heart of the Karst region. It is more than just a geological formation. It’s a time capsule whispering tales of a prehistoric world. The entrance to Grotta del Pastino isn’t grand. It is a subtle opening. It’s located near the more famous Grotta dei Vasi. To find this hidden gem, follow the path from S. Croce to Aurisina. Once you pass under the autostrada, continue for about a hundred meters. You’ll climb over a low wall. Then you will descend into a dolina with a flat bottom. The entrance to Grotta del Pastino awaits on the southern side. It’s tucked beneath a characteristic dry-stone wall known locally as a “pastino”. This gives the cave its name. Inside the Grotta del Pastino, darkness envelops you. The air is still and heavy. The passage descends, twisting and turning into the earth. The cave extends 75 meters. It reaches a depth of 23 meters. From the base of the initial descent, the cave branches into three distinct sections. One leads northwest. It is a narrow tunnel. It opens into a small chamber. Another branch winds southeast, a meandering path that ascends gradually. The final section plunges south. It features a 6-meter drop. This drop is partially blocked by fallen rocks. This creates a sense of mystery. Does something lie beyond? The cave’s various passages interconnect. This creates a labyrinthine feel. Imagine the thrill of exploration as you navigate these passages. You can almost hear the echoes of prehistoric inhabitants. They sought shelter in these same chambers.
