Beneath an unassuming patch of land near the Prosecco-Gabrovizza overpass lies an entrance. This is no ordinary hole. It is the Grotta del Maestro. Have you ever wondered what secrets lie hidden beneath our feet?
The Grotta del Maestro is more than just a cave. It is a journey into the depths of the earth. It is a testament to the relentless spirit of exploration. This cave was named in memory of Carlo Finocchiaro. He was the president of the Trieste speleological group, who died in 1983.
Picture this. It is December 1983. A determined speleologist named Roberto notices a strong draft rising from a small depression. Others might have dismissed it. Roberto saw potential. He began to dig encouraged by the air.
After days of hard work, Roberto opened the Grotta del Maestro. To prevent rocks from falling, a large concrete pipe was placed at the entrance. This ensured safe exploration.
The Grotta del Maestro extends 346 meters. Its depth reaches 147 meters. The main entrance sits at 231 meters above sea level. The cave descends to a bottom elevation of 84 meters.
Let’s explore the Grotta del Maestro. A 6-meter shaft leads to a muddy chamber. This chamber descends to a 30-meter pit. This pit opens into a spacious cavern with massive fallen rocks.
On the other side, a stalagmite crust ascends. It descends east to a gallery. This gallery leads to a 46-meter pit called “La Verta.” From here, you can continue through a richly decorated gallery or descend to the “Picnic” level.
Imagine the “Picnic” area. It is adorned with stalactites and columns. This picturesque spot offers a place for a brief rest. From here, a 9-meter drop leads to another gallery with two branches.
One branch ends at a glittering wall of concretions. A challenging climb leads to a 40-meter-long fissure. The other branch descends into a 7-meter pit. This connects to the lower part of the gallery.
Deep inside the Grotta del Maestro lies a series of small caves. These caves contain sandy deposits. Following the air current, one encounters a very mobile landslide. Beyond this lies a 25-meter-deep pit.
Climbing the chimney of this pit leads to a chamber filled with debris. Further ascent leads to a narrow gallery. This gallery features erosion pits. After more climbing, you reach a spacious chamber. It is topped by a tall chimney.
Exploration of the Grotta del Maestro revealed connections to other cave systems. Tests with smoke established a link to the Grotta dell’Austriaco. It also connects to the 5219/5786VG cave system.
However, the Grotta del Maestro presents dangers. Many unstable rocks pose a significant risk. In 2023, safety measures were taken to secure the access. A pre-existing hatch was secured. Despite this, the risk of falling material in the first shaft remains.
