Did you know that the Grotta del Cervo in Trieste holds a secret? It’s not just a cave it’s a time capsule. The Grotta del Cervo is a small cave tucked away in the Trieste Karst. Its discovery was quite accidental. In 1953 a gardener dug a hole. He wanted to build a water tank. Instead he found the Grotta del Cervo. Inside were fossilized bones. Many belonged to a deer. This is how the cave got its name. The Grotta del Cervo means Deer Cave in Italian. The bones were embedded in the cave’s many concretions. These are rock formations created by mineral deposits. They are beautiful and very interesting. They tell us a story of ancient life. They tell us what animals lived here long ago. The Grotta del Cervo is not a large cave. Its planimetric development is only 10 meters. Its depth is 13.5 meters. The deepest point is 230.5 meters above sea level. The entrance is higher. It’s at 244 meters above sea level. The Society Alpina delle Giulie studied the cave in 1953. They took the deer bones and other fossils. Sadly little has been published about these important finds. The Grotta del Cervo remains somewhat of a mystery. It whispers of ancient deer and a hidden past. It reminds us that even the smallest places can hold profound secrets.
