Hidden amongst dense bushes lies the Grotta del Bersaglio Militare. This fascinating cave also known as Jama pri Skalovskih dolinah is more than just a hole in the ground. It’s a portal to history. A secret whispered through time.
The Grotta del Bersaglio Militare boasts two entrances. One is a steep rocky slope. Rough-hewn steps lead down a path used by Austrian soldiers during World War I. They used this cave as a temporary shelter. They even improved access with this rudimentary staircase. The other entrance is a six and a half meter deep well.
Archaeological digs revealed fascinating discoveries. Pottery shards and other prehistoric objects were found deep within. This shows the cave’s ancient history. Evidence points to settlements dating back to the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. A bone pendant and a whistle made from an ox bone were unearthed. These are remarkable examples of prehistoric craftsmanship. Unfortunately water damage stopped further exploration.
The cave’s name Grotta del Bersaglio Militare literally translates to Military Target Cave. The area was once an Austrian military training ground. Soldiers used the nearby woods for target practice and maneuvers. The cave’s military artifacts back this up. They show it was a convenient place for soldiers to take cover.
