Grotta a SE di Gabrovizza

Slipping through a crack in the earth, we find ourselves at the entrance of Grotta a SE di Gabrovizza. This cave, near the village of Gabrovizza, whispers secrets of the Karst region. Grotta a SE di Gabrovizza isn’t as famous as its neighbor, the Giant Cave. But it holds its own unique charm. The cave’s entrance is unassuming, almost hidden near a dry-stone wall and a sinkhole. The documented exploration of Grotta a SE di Gabrovizza reveals a fascinating underground world. A descent into the main shaft leads to a cavern. This cavern is about six by nine meters, its walls adorned with calcite formations, and chimneys rising above. The floor is a thick layer of clay, sloping downwards. Climbing this slope, we squeeze through a low passage. This opens into a smaller cavern, partially decorated with flowstone and other cave formations. This cavern ends in an ascending slope of rock debris, topped by another chimney. Back in the main cavern, a small drop leads to a fissure, blocked by stones. On either side of this blockage, two pits descend. One is a short dead end. The other plunges vertically for 13.4 meters. Returning to the main cavern and crossing a calcite flow, we enter another chamber. Its entrance is like a balcony overlooking the main shaft. This chamber features calcified walls and a clay floor. One side gradually narrows towards the ceiling. The other side presents a small climb over calcified stones and clay, leading to a small drop. This area eventually ends, blocked by boulders and clay. At the bottom of the 13.4-meter pit, yet another pit descends 22 meters. This one shows signs of more pronounced erosion, with numerous rock blades. At its bottom, an impassable, smaller pit hints at even deeper mysteries. Interestingly, the walls of this last pit display distinct rock layers. These layers contain accumulations of fossils, spaced at remarkably regular intervals of about a meter and a half. Grotta a SE di Gabrovizza might not hold the grandeur of the Giant Cave. Yet, it offers a unique journey into the heart of the Karst. Its hidden chambers and geological features provide a glimpse into the forces that shaped this landscape.
