A narrow, vertical opening beckons us. This is the entrance to the Grotta a SE del Monte S. Primo. Here, on the slopes of Monte S. Primo near Trieste, Italy, a hidden world awaits. The Grotta a SE del Monte S. Primo, also known as Grotta 2 a SE del Monte S. Primo, first appeared in the cave registry on January 1, 1971. Today, a small, 0.35 by 0.55-meter opening marks its entrance. This vertical shaft plunges nine meters deep, a slippery slide into the earth. The cave itself is a modest 14 meters in planimetric development and 12 meters deep, reaching a bottom altitude of 253 meters. The descent is a simple vertical drop, leading to a chamber formed within the flysch, the sandstone and siltstone formations of the Trieste area. These rocks date back to the Paleocene and Eocene epochs. The Grotta a SE del Monte S. Primo holds a secret. While the accessible portion is relatively small, unexplored passages hint at further depths. Imagine what other wonders might lie hidden within the earth, just beyond our reach. On December 19, 2015, members of the Gruppo Triestino Speleologi tagged the cave entrance, marking it for future generations of explorers. This seemingly small act connects us to the history of exploration and the ongoing quest to understand the hidden world beneath our feet. Perhaps one day, those unexplored passages will reveal their secrets, adding another chapter to the story of the Grotta a SE del Monte S. Primo.
