The cave was cataloged as number 3221. Its local number is 5064VG. The main entrance was accurately positioned on March 28, 2007. It lies in the Carso Triestino area within the municipality of Sgonico.

To reach Grotta a NW del Colle Pauliano, walk a few dozen meters from the Abisso Martel. You will find it just above the flat bottom of a large sinkhole.

Grotta a NW del Colle Pauliano extends only 4.5 meters. Its depth reaches 7 meters. The cave floor rests at an altitude of 261 meters above sea level.

Inside Grotta a NW del Colle Pauliano, discover a series of two small shafts. They are connected by a narrow passage. Clastic material forms the floor, blocking any further exploration.

While Grotta a NW del Colle Pauliano may be modest in size, other caves in the area are truly gigantic. Not far from here lies the Grotta Gigante. It once held the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest show cave. Its central cavern soars to 107 meters high, stretches 130 meters long, and spans 65 meters wide.

The Grotta Gigante was first explored in 1840. The karst was searched for underground water to supply Trieste’s aqueduct. It opened to the public in 1908. Inside, a path lets visitors spend 45 minutes. They can marvel at calcite formations. Some rise as high as 12 meters.

Grotta Gigante maintains a constant temperature. This has allowed for the placement of scientific instruments. Two Grotta Gigante horizontal pendulums hang down about 100 m. They are the longest geodetic pendula in the world.

The Museum of Speleology sits near the Grotta Gigante. It shows speleological, geological, and paleontological finds. There are also archaeological pieces and a poster collection of the cave.
