Established in 1959 Groote Schuur High School initially served white pupils only. This was during the apartheid era. Imagine the stark contrast to today. Groote Schuur High is now a vibrant multiracial school. It stands proudly in Newlands Cape Town.
The school’s history is fascinating. It began as an Afrikaans medium school. It later transitioned to a dual-medium school offering classes in both English and Afrikaans. By 2011 English became the sole language of instruction. This reflects the changing demographics and the evolving educational landscape of South Africa.
Groote Schuur High boasts impressive facilities. These include state-of-the-art classrooms with interactive whiteboards. There are also well-equipped science labs. The 180-seat Nassau auditorium is known for its excellent acoustics. The school also houses a well-stocked library complete with a Chinese section.
Beyond the classrooms Groote Schuur High possesses extensive sporting facilities. These include Inversnaid and Vredenhof sports fields. There are also tennis and netball courts. A water polo pool and clubhouse are located at Vredenhof. The school even has two tuck shops to cater to its students’ needs.
Initially housing only 37 students the school has grown significantly. The current school building on Palmyra Road opened in June 1964. In 1978 Nassau High School merged with Groote Schuur High. This is reflected in the school’s crest which incorporates the lion of Nassau and the gable of Groote Schuur. The amalgamation is part of the school’s rich and evolving history.
Groote Schuur High’s history showcases adaptability and a spirit of enterprise. In 1991 it became the first public Afrikaans high school in South Africa with a broad admissions policy. This monumental decision signaled a shift away from the segregationist policies of the past.
