The scent of aged oak and sun-baked earth hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to Groot Constantia Manor House.

Groot Constantia stands before you a testament to centuries of history. This isn’t just any manor house. It’s the oldest wine estate in South Africa. It’s a living piece of Cape Town’s past. Imagine Simon van der Stel the VOC Governor. He received this land in 1685. He built the original house. He used it for wine production. He also farmed cattle and grew fruit and vegetables.

After van der Stel’s death in 1712 the estate was divided. Groot Constantia became one of three parts. The Cloete family purchased the manor house in 1779. They expanded the vineyards. They also commissioned Louis Michel Thibault to improve the mansion. The Cloete family added the wine cellar in 1791. This cellar boasts a pediment sculpted by Anton Anreith. The house remained in their possession until 1885. During that time Groot Constantia became world-renowned for its Constantia dessert wine.

A devastating fire in 1925 destroyed the manor house. Fortunately funds were raised. Groot Constantia was meticulously restored to its original Cape Dutch splendor. In 1969 it joined the South African Cultural History Museum. In 1993 the Groot Constantia Trust took ownership. Today Iziko South African Museum manages the exhibitions. They focus on rural slavery and the lives of slaves in the early Cape colonial period.

Sadly a significant part of Groot Constantia’s history was stolen in 2024. The estate’s historic slave bell cast in 1716 vanished. It has yet to be recovered.

Groot Constantia’s legacy extends beyond its walls. It’s part of the Constantia wine route. It stands alongside other estates. These estates produce excellent wines. They continue the tradition of winemaking that began here centuries ago. You can still taste the history. You can almost feel the echoes of generations past. This is more than a wine estate. It’s a journey through time. A journey into the heart of South African heritage.
