The GRG 21 Ödenburger Straße started in 1972. At first, it was part of the GRG Franklinstraße 26. The first classes were held at GRG Franklinstraße.

In 1972/73, the school moved to a pavilion on Franklinstraße 35. Space became tight. Some classes were moved to Volksschule Brünnerstraße and Hauptschule Jochbergengasse.

Construction of the current building on Ödenburger Straße 74 began in 1974. The plans were big. They included space for 40 classrooms. The building was first used in September 1975. The construction was finally completed in 1978.

GRG 21 Ödenburger Straße became independent on January 1, 1975. This marked a new chapter for the school.

In 2007/08, GRG 21 Ödenburger Straße started a special project. It was the first school in Austria to have an ergometer class. Students used exercise bikes to study how movement affects learning. The project was a success. Other schools in Europe have copied it.

GRG 21 Ödenburger Straße offers different types of education. There is a Gymnasium that focuses on languages and culture. The Realgymnasium emphasizes science and math. And, the Wirtschaftskundliches Realgymnasium focuses on business and social skills. Students can learn French, Latin, Italian, or Spanish as a second or third language.

Many people have led GRG 21 Ödenburger Straße. Ernst Mattes was the first director from 1972 to 1982. Heinz Dainko followed from 1983 to 2000. Elfriede Jarmai led the school from 2001 to 2013. Brigitte Fuchs was the director until 2023. Silvia Böck is the current director since 2024.
