Is this where the ghosts of disciplined children roam? Right here, at GRG 17 Parhamerplatz, once echoed the footsteps of students under the stern gaze of Pater Ignaz Parhamer. GRG 17 Parhamerplatz started its life not as a place of learning, but as a response to overcrowding in Vienna’s schools. In 1886, on the site then known as Petersplatz, a grand double schoolhouse was erected. This new school, designed by Carl Haas and brought to life by architect Josef Grűnbeck, opened its doors on November 25th, 1886. It boasted 36 classrooms, a gymnasium, and even apartments for the school staff. Years later, in 1894, Petersplatz was renamed to honor the legacy of Pater Ignaz Parhamer. An advocate for education, Parhamer was known for his strict, some might say harsh, methods. He believed in military-like discipline for children. His influence on education, though controversial, is forever etched in the story of GRG 17 Parhamerplatz. Perhaps today’s students catch whispers of the past as they walk these halls, a reminder of how education, and Vienna itself, have evolved.
