Haven’t you always wondered what secrets lie within those grand old houses overlooking Sydney Harbour? Greycliff House is one such treasure. It stands as a testament to a bygone era.

Greycliff House is a historic two-story home. It is located in the Sydney suburb of Vaucluse, New South Wales, Australia. Completed around 1852, it showcases Victorian Rustic Gothic style. Greycliff is recognized on the Municipality of Woollahra local government heritage list.

Imagine stepping back in time to the 1850s. John Reeve, a wealthy migrant, commissioned architect John Frederick Hilly to build Greycliff. Reeve gifted it to Fanny Wentworth, his wife and daughter of William Charles Wentworth. The house was built with sandstone. Cedar joinery and fine plasterwork added to its elegance. A sealed entrance road, originally Greycliff’s carriage drive, leads to the house.

Interestingly, Reeve and his wife preferred traveling to England. They leased Greycliff House to prominent Sydney citizens. Colonel John George Nathaniel Gibbes, the Collector of Customs for NSW, was among the first tenants. From Greycliff’s north-facing verandah, Gibbes watched ship movements on Sydney Harbour’s main channel. Gibbes lived here until 1859. He then retired and moved to Yarralumla homestead. Today, Yarralumla serves as the official residence of Australia’s Governor-General.

After the Gibbes family, a string of private leaseholders occupied Greycliff House. In 1911, the New South Wales Government acquired the house. It was repurposed as a hospital for babies and later as a mothercraft center. In 1978, Greycliff became part of the Sydney Harbour National Park.

Today, Greycliff is a large and elaborate neo-Gothic Victorian house. It offers unobstructed water views of Sydney Harbour. Multiple gables, a long entrance hall, and a stately staircase define its architecture. Carved barge boards add to its charm. Stables stand at the rear. Gardens cascade down to the beachfront. Natural bushland frames the house.

The house faced a setback in 1897. A fire caused extensive damage to the upstairs interior and roof. However, it was soon restored to its former glory.

Greycliff House has served as a visitors’ center and headquarters for the Sydney Harbour National Park. It also appeared in the 2013 Australian television series A Place To Call Home.

As you stand here, consider the layers of history. From private residence to public institution, Greycliff has witnessed significant moments. Its walls could tell countless stories of Sydney’s past. Greycliff House remains a captivating landmark. It connects us to the rich heritage of Vaucluse and Sydney Harbour.
