Here you see the Gregor-Mendel-Denkmal, a monument dedicated to the Austrian Augustinian monk. Located in Vienna’s 20th district, it is a stele made of stone and bronze. It stands as a tribute to Mendel’s groundbreaking work in genetics. The inscription on the stele reads: “Johann Gregor Mendel 1822-1884 Dem Entdecker der Vererbungsgesetze bei Mensch Tier und Pflanze”. This means: “Johann Gregor Mendel 1822-1884 To the discoverer of the laws of heredity in humans, animals and plants”. Mendel’s groundbreaking experiments with pea plants in the mid-19th century laid the foundation for our understanding of heredity and genetics. What may not be obvious is that the Gregor-Mendel-Denkmal was created by the Italian sculptor and architect Mario Petrucci between 1954 and 1957. It was unveiled on June 22, 1956. This monument pays homage to a scientific giant whose work continues to shape our understanding of the natural world.
