Greenwood Primitive Baptist church

Tucked away at the intersection of Cardinal Drive and Minnieville Road stands the Greenwood Primitive Baptist Church. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Greenwood Primitive Baptist Church was established in 1884. The church land was a gift from the Danes of Pilgrims’ Rest. The official deed, with trustees George Tansill, George Maddox, and Ed Calvert, was recorded at the courthouse in 1887. The church has a rich history, intertwined with the very name of the surrounding area, Minnieville. In 1884, a small post office was established nearby. Dewitt Alexander, the church’s first postmaster, named the area after his daughter, Minnie. Greenwood Primitive Baptist Church served as a cornerstone for the community. The congregation was initially formed by members of Chopawamsic Church in Stafford County. Their first pastor was John T. Alexander, who began his ministry in 1883. The church was dedicated in June 1884. It officially joined the Baptist association two months later in August. The church also holds a quiet sanctuary, the Greenwood Primitive Baptist Cemetery. Here, within its grounds, lie generations of families who shaped the community. The cemetery contains approximately 100 burials. The oldest recorded burial is Thomas Bayton Alexander in 1889. The most recent burial recorded is Robert Woodall in 2022. The cemetery features a variety of markers, including tombstones and fieldstones, some unmarked. It’s a peaceful place, a poignant reminder of lives lived and legacies left behind. Greenwood Primitive Baptist Church stands as a timeless landmark.
