Greenwich Presbyterian Church nestled in Nokesville Virginia boasts a rich history. Its name comes from the community crossroads where it was established. The church is a vital part of the area’s heritage. Its existence spans over 200 years.
Imagine the first prayer meetings held in Mrs Aminta E Moxley’s home in the fall of 1802. From those modest beginnings a congregation blossomed. They moved from a simple log structure to a larger one. Traveling preachers served the growing community. In 1833 Thomas Bloomer Balch became the first official pastor. The current sanctuary a beautiful example of architecture was built in 1858. Lucinda Irland and her husband Charles Green spearheaded this construction. Remarkably the church survived the Civil War unscathed. It remained the heart of the community well into the 20th century.
The church faced challenges but it persevered. Rev J Royall Cooke served for over 33 years a testament to dedication. Students from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond also contributed to the church’s ministry. Rev Albert C Winn was among them. The church expanded adding a fellowship and education building in 1948. Further additions followed in 1959 and 1972 reflecting its growth and changing needs.
