For over half a century, Greenpeace has been a beacon of environmental activism. Here in Vienna, at the headquarters of Greenpeace Österreich, we find the nerve center of environmental protection in Central and Eastern Europe. It all started in 1971, when a group of environmentalists in Vancouver, Canada, set sail to protest against US atomic bomb tests. The movement quickly spread across the globe, and Greenpeace Österreich was formed in 1983. The organization’s first action in Austria was incredibly successful: it helped shut down a trichlorophenol plant in Linz that was polluting the air with the toxic substance dioxin. Today, Greenpeace Österreich’s reach extends throughout Central and Eastern Europe, as it works to protect our oceans, our forests, and our climate. The organization’s mission is to advocate for a better future for everyone and to build a greener world. Greenpeace Österreich continues to push for environmental action on a local and global scale, ensuring that our planet thrives for generations to come.
