“To God Be the Glory” is more than just a saying here. It is the cornerstone of Greater People’s Union Baptist Church. Since 1945, this church has been a beacon of faith and community. It all began with a group of people meeting at 3rd and “K” Streets, S.E. They were led by Reverend L.J. Brooks.
Greater People’s Union Baptist Church grew and sought a permanent home. Divine providence led them to 1111 South Carolina Avenue, S.E. Reverend Brooks’ leadership fostered community. The church met the needs of many.
After Reverend Brooks passed in 1956, Reverend John H. Kenner stepped in. He continued moving Greater People’s Union Baptist Church forward. In 1968, Reverend John W. Moses became the under-Sheppard. The congregation flourished under his guidance. They paid off significant debts. They renovated the building and added air conditioning.
Reverend Moses envisioned a larger church. He wanted to accommodate the growing congregation. On April 19, 1976, the ground broke for a new church building. The Greater People’s Union Baptist Church family celebrated burning the mortgage in 1992.
In June 1995, Greater People’s Union Baptist Church celebrated its 50th anniversary. After Reverend Moses retired, Reverend Ernest Pitts Sr. became pastor in 1996. He made needed repairs. He also ensured accessibility for the handicap.
In 2015, Greater People’s Union Baptist Church faced a challenge. A fire forced them out of their church home for four months. But their faith never wavered. Thanks to St. Paul Church, they missed only one Sunday service. The fire paved the way for renovations. These included new ceilings and a sound system.
In October 2012, Reverend James L. Dawkins, Sr. became the Interim Pastor. In 2014, he was elected Pastor. Reverend Dawkins led Greater People’s Union Baptist Church to new heights. In 2021, the church purchased a new facility. They were mortgage-free once again.
Allison’s Closet embodies the church’s mission. It provides clothing to women in need. Allison, the first ordained woman Deacon, inspires this ministry. Every second and fourth Saturday, women receive support.
Today, Greater People’s Union Baptist Church continues its mission. It lifts the name of Jesus. The church strives through praise and worship. They focus on stewardship and evangelism. They address the needs of the people. They improve lives as Christ did. All are welcome at Greater People’s Union Baptist Church. To God Be The Glory.
