Great Falls Overlook 1 offers the most intimate perspective of the falls. This overlook puts you closest to the cascading water. You can almost feel the spray on your face.
This overlook is located to the left of the Visitor Center’s south end. A short trail leads down to a dirt viewing platform. The rest of the area is rocky. Scramble carefully to find your perfect vantage point.
Please heed the warnings. Do not venture beyond the fences. The rocks are slippery and the current is treacherous. Falls from this area can cause serious injury or even death.
Accessibility is limited at Great Falls Overlook 1. There is not a fully accessible trail to Overlook 1. The terrain requires some easy climbing. Overlooks 2 and 3 offer accessible alternatives.
The Potomac River drops 76 feet in less than a mile at Great Falls. The river narrows dramatically as it passes through Mather Gorge. This creates the powerful rapids and falls you see here.
Imagine standing here during a flood. In 1996, water gushed over the falls at 300000 cubic feet per second. This is more than 130 times the normal rate. Four spectators required a helicopter rescue.
The highest recorded flood occurred in 1936. The Potomac reached more than 17 feet above our current position.
Great Falls’ power has shaped more than just the landscape. George Washington envisioned using the Potomac to connect the East Coast with the Ohio River Valley. The Patowmack Canal was built to circumnavigate the Great Falls. Remnants of this historic canal can still be seen today.
Take a moment to appreciate the unique geology of Great Falls. It lies on a fall line. This is a break between hard metamorphic rock and softer sedimentary rock. The river erodes the sedimentary rock. This leaves behind the rugged cascades.
