Hidden beneath these baseball fields lies a secret from the Cold War era. This is Great Falls Nike Park. It was once a Nike missile launch site.
Let’s journey back to the 1950s. The United States was locked in a tense standoff with the Soviet Union. This was the Cold War. Fear of aerial attacks loomed large. To protect Washington D.C., the U.S. Army built 13 Nike missile sites. Great Falls Nike Missile Site was one of them.
Built in 1954, it became active in 1955. The Great Falls Nike Missile Launch Site played a crucial role. It helped defend against potential enemy aircraft. The site had two parts. There was a Launch Site and an Integrated Fire Control Site. The control site was a mile or two away.
Great Falls Nike Missile Launch Site housed Nike Ajax missiles. These were first-generation missiles. They were massive at 34 feet long. Each weighed about 2,400 pounds. They could travel 25 miles. Their top speed was Mach 2.3. That is really fast.
In 1962, the Great Falls Nike Missile Launch Site closed. The site was sanitized. All weapons were removed. For years, the buildings decayed. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the area changed. Suburban development took over. Buildings were torn down. Missile magazine hatches were buried.
The Fairfax County Park Authority transformed the land. It became Great Falls Nike Park. Today, there is a tennis court here. Also, two baseball fields sit on top of buried missile magazines. In 1980, Forestville Elementary School was built. It stands on the site of the former barracks.
What remains of the missile site? Look around. The decaying barbed wire fence is still here. It once surrounded the facility. An earthen berm also remains. Missiles were once fueled here.
Notice the United States Air Force gap-filler radar dome. These domes detected low-flying aircraft. They could evade long-range radar networks. This dome is peculiar. This launch site never housed a radar dome. Its origins are unknown. Some believe it came from the Integrated Fire Control Site. The dome has cut-out panels. People can enter and enjoy its eerie echo.
The park is located off Utterback Store Road. It is near Leesburg Pike. The radar dome is next to the first baseball field. Please be mindful of the elementary school nearby.
From 2000 to 2014, Great Falls Nike Park saw many improvements. Athletic fields were upgraded. Roads and parking areas were improved. Trails were added. Stormwater management systems were installed. The park also got new landscaping. These upgrades were a collaboration. The Fairfax County Park Authority worked with local groups. The Great Falls Little League was a partner. New playing fields were designed. They have irrigation and lighting. Fencing and bleachers were installed.
In 1994, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources placed a historic marker here. It recognizes the site’s past. Great Falls Nike Park is more than just a park. It is a reminder of the Cold War. It tells a story of defense and transformation.
