A salty sea breeze whispers secrets of centuries past. Here at Great Courland Bay in Tobago we stand on hallowed ground. This very bay witnessed ambitious dreams and bitter defeats.

Great Courland Bay is more than just a picturesque inlet. It’s a stage where European powers clashed. Indigenous peoples resisted. Courlanders sought fortune. The Dutch aimed for dominance.

Imagine the year 1654. Eighty families and 149 soldiers arrive. They’re Courlanders from the Duchy of Courland. A Baltic nation. Their ship The Arms of the Duchess of Courland. It sails into Great Courland Bay. They rename the island New Courland. They build Fort Jacob a testament to their bold ambition. This fort housed the first Lutheran church in the Caribbean. A surprising fact.

But this is not a tale of effortless conquest. The bay also saw another arrival. A Dutch expedition under Pieter Becquart. They land at Lampsins Bay on the opposite side of the island. They establish Nieuw Flushing. Three forts rise there. A rivalry begins. The island is split between these two European powers. A microcosm of larger conflicts across the globe.

The Courlanders struggle. The Baltic War rages. Reinforcements don’t come. On December 11 1659 they surrender to the Dutch. The Dutch colony flourishes. Three churches and several sugar mills. Sugar rum and cacao. Over a thousand colonists. Thousands of slaves. A vibrant but brutal economy.

Yet the story doesn’t end there. Great Courland Bay sees further battles. British pirates from Jamaica capture the island in 1666. English and then French troops briefly hold the forts. The Dutch return. The French attack again in 1677. A massive explosion at Fort Sterreschans. The end of the Dutch dreams.

The waters of Great Courland Bay have seen much. The ghosts of Courlanders Dutch and Caribs linger in the waves. They echo through the wind. This bay is a powerful reminder of Tobago’s complex past. A past of struggle ambition and ultimately a shifting balance of power. A legacy etched into the very sand of this beautiful beach.
