Granby Fort

“A soldier’s life for me,” James must have thought as he enlisted in the 70th Regiment of Foot. Could he have imagined his final resting place would be here, at Fort Granby? This fort, perched on a headland between Barbados and Pinfold Bays, is a testament to Tobago’s turbulent past. The first British fort on the island, Fort Granby was built around 1765. It was meant to protect the fledgling capital, Georgetown. Named after the Marquis of Granby, a British hero of the Seven Years’ War, it represented British ambition in the Caribbean. Life at Fort Granby, however, was far from glorious. The fort saw its share of turmoil. In 1770, soldiers stationed here, including perhaps James himself, were called upon to quell a slave rebellion. The revolt was eventually suppressed, but it highlighted the simmering tensions of the time. Today, little remains of the original fort save for the evocative ruins and the silent tombstone of James Clark, a soldier who died in 1772 at the young age of 30. As you wander through the interwoven trees and gazebos, try to imagine the echoes of marching boots and the rumble of cannons. Although time has weathered its walls, Fort Granby still whispers tales of ambition, conflict, and the lives lost and won on this tiny Caribbean island.
